Photochroms

Welcome to the Photochroms website.

This site is all about the wonderful colourful images that were made in the 19th century. The 401 photochroms (or photochromes) date mostly from around 1890 or even earlier. Photochroms are prints rather than photos, made from black and white photographic negatives colourised by using a lithographic print process.

Have a look around and enjoy the wonderful scenic pictures and feel free to leave any comments using the comment box underneath the pictures. If you have some more information on any of these pictures or any other suggestions, much appreciated? Check out the Album Unidentified and help solve a puzzle or two! There are 12 comments on the site at present.

Images can be viewed by year, by album, by country or by contributor, or you can use the simple search at the top of this page. Tip: Use the 'Additions' option in the topmenu to see all the changes since your last visit or to see all the pictures and comments of the last couple of days!

You are also able to make your own album of the images (your favourites of the photos on the site) and make this publically available if you wish. Use the 'My Album' link at the bottom.

If you have any suggestions please email them to info@photochroms.com.

If you like old images why not have a look at Time Capsules
