Busy promenade in Herne Bay

Photochrom 11261 titled 'Herne Bay, clock tower'.

Herne Bay is a seaside town in Kent, England. It is located on the south side of the Thames Estuary close to Canterbury. Originally a small shipping community it became popular after building the promenade and the pier (visible in the background) as a seaside resort. Reaching its peak of popularity in the Victorian age (as you can see!).

The clock was built after a donation of £4,000 in 1837 by Mrs Ann Thwaytes, a wealthy lady from London. The clock is 75 feet (23 m) and stands on the town's seafront.
