View of Ilfracombe from Hillsborough Hill

Picture of the (nowadays) seaside resort Ilfracombe, on the north coast of Devon, England, as it was around 1890. It looks like a splendid place to visit and live, back then anyway.

But there seems to be a bit of a catch. I quote: 'when the tourism market faltered at the end of the Victorian era hoteliers invited people living in major urban areas to the town with the prospect of seasonal employment. Later, as unemployment levels rose, this 'inward migration' caused social problems and friction between these people and those with a long history of residence.' (source Wiki)
I suppose the closure of the railway line in 1970 did not help much either.

Comments

I have an almost identical, but not quite, view like this. It has a few more rocks in the foreground and must be taken from a little higher up. It is entitled "10, 147 - ILFRACOMBE" So they must have published two pictures with the same number. Any thoughts? How much are the originals worth anyway?
